WHY DOES LISTENING TO 40 HZ SOUNDS SEEM TO HELP CLEAR PLAQUES?
Neuroscientists have known for decades that the brain tends to fire 40 times per second (40 Hz; in the "gamma" frequency range) when thinking hard or when different areas of the brain are working together. In fact, we can actually force various parts of brain to fire at 40 Hz by exposing the senses to 40 Hz information, such as sounds or light flashes. In the last few years, scientists have learned that 40 Hz brain activity triggers a natural immune system response that stimulates microglial cells in the brain to quickly grow and clean. Within minutes, activated microglial cells nearly double in size and begin to engulf plaques and tangles. Animal studies have shown that mice who have been genetically altered to show plaques and tangles will have up to a 40% reduction in plaques in just one week after listening to 40 Hz clicks for only one hour per day. Some animals can have nearly 80% clearance of plaques after one week if they are exposed to time-locked 40 Hz sounds and 40 Hz light flashes while exercising. Listening to 40 Hz clicks with your eyes closes seems to facilitate frontal lobe activation.
Increasingly, researchers are using the term GENUS (Gamma ENtrainment Using Sensory stimulation) to describe the non-invasive 40 Hz exposure procedure.
Research on people takes many years to complete and is just starting to get published. Early studies have shown that individuals with memory problems experience improved MRI volumes after exposure to these sounds/lights for just a few months. Individuals who have uncontrollable shaking may experience a meaningful reductions in shaking movements.
